How To Fight Depression For The Unemployed
It is 2011 and this year I will be turning 50 years old which is very depressing! While I have always been a very fit and athletic individual I have decided to make this year fitness focused as I truly believe in the benefits of becoming the most fit person I possibly can be. So what are those benefits you may ask? Well for starters whenever I am in a fitness phase of my life, which has been the vast majority of my life, I feel more in control! I can't explain why that happens, or how it happens, but my belief is this feeling is derived from the process of steering myself down a certain path that I am totally in control of the inevitable outcome. Also, a new found sense of confidence is always part of my mindset whenever I am actively engaged in the fitness lifestyle.
How
can this help you, the job seeker or the unemployed seeking work? Well, just
the two items I mentioned above would be a huge benefit to you as I would
probably guess you are struggling with both your loss of "sense of
control" in your life as well as a lack of self confidence resulting from
your job search/job loss - marriage
counseling or better put: Exercise can easily turn the tables in a more
positive way in regards to enhancing your confidence levels as well as giving
you a sense of purpose in your life that only being very fit can bring. Here
are some of the items I will be looking into changing starting tomorrow in my
effort to gain back my six pack abs and the muscle definition I once had 10
years earlier.
Diet:
instead of eating once or possibly twice a day which is my normal way of - well
-eating, I will structure five small meals that are well-balanced and provide
sufficient protein to feed my muscles as I go through my workout routine.
Cardio:
like all of us I hate doing cardio! Don't get me wrong, about 15 years ago I
used to run every single day at least 3 to 5 miles through Waikiki. I used to
just live for the opportunity to get out of work and drive down to the park and
get into my running as it gave me a sense of stress release at the end of my
hectic business day. the
marriage counselor My goal is to perform cardio six of the seven days per
week whether it be walking for 45 minutes. per day in Waikiki or on the
treadmill for the same period of time while in the gym.
Weight
training: currently I am in the gym two days a week for about 45 min. each of
those two days. The weight training is sufficient to help grow muscle mass as I
am a follower of the Arthur Jones high intensity training model that Mike
Mentzer wrote about in several of his bodybuilding books dating back to the
1980s. diversity
training I am a firm believer it is easy to grow muscle, but it is
difficult to see your muscularity if you are even slightly over your ideal body
weight. So the bottom line here is that I will stick to my two days a week
weight training schedule and increase the intensity level as well as the
selection of exercises to see if I cannot better my physical performance as a
result of this weight training regimen.
Rest
and recovery: this is where I fall short of the mark each and every time; some
days I get less than three hours sleep which totally throws off my body's clock
resulting in a very fatigued feeling that can last for a couple of days. For
this time around I plan to better manage my sleep schedule to ensure that I am
able to sleep at least six hours on those nights where I was used to getting
only three hours and for the other nights attempt 8 to 9 hours of sleep. If you
do not recover from your weight training workouts, as well as all the cardio
you are doing, you will only be tearing down your body and not building it up.
Commitment: family
therapy I think it's very funny that every year at the gym I go to,
starting in January there is a huge influx of people who start their New Year's
resolution by joining the gym. For about 2 to 3 months it's very difficult
during certain times of the day to get on certain machines to complete your
workout as there are an over abundance of eager gym newbie's exploring the
fitness lifestyle, probably for the first time. Then comes April, and the vast
majority of these folks are gone! While I have not missed a week in the gym for
years this time around I plan to stay even more committed to the cardio, the
diet and the rest components so I can see the results of the hard work I'll be
putting in.
But
the biggest benefit of all, like I mentioned above, will be this new found
sense of pride and confidence coupled with a feeling of being more in control
of my life. If you are going through a period of unemployment I cannot stress
enough the importance of exercise and its positive impact on depression and
self worth. Do yourself a huge favor and do something physical today and I
guarantee you'll feel much, much better for it.
